Words. To put words to this is a reminder of the “otherness” of God. He is not explained in lists written in English or encompassed in any language or number of syllables we can string together. Since He is worthy, I’ll try.
Where is God? Omnipresent
He is far, far beyond all that we know to be true about Him and still nearer than our next breath.
He’s in the sunrise pouring out new mercies and in each sunset saying “there was grace for today”.
He’s on the streets of Mumbai beckoning to the heart of the buyer, the seller and the young girl sold.
He’s in churches, but also bars and in mountain tops, but also the deepest of vallies.
He’s there in the hottest of fiery furnaces making for a mighty plus one who cries, “victory”!
He’s there poised and ready to speak the words that render the enemy defenseless.
Pleading your case and singing love over you while surrounded by all the saints and angels as they cry “Holy! Holy! Holy!”
Look, there He is stopping the tide from turning violent. He’s there when you close your eyes at night and when you open them reluctantly.
In the ram in the thicket, in the colors of promise after the flood, in the burning bush that will not be consumed, in pillar of fire by night and the cloud on the mercy seat, in the whisper Elijah heard, in scarlet rope of Rahab, in the cry of the one in the wilderness, in the tearing of a veil of separation, in the rolling away of a stone and in the force of presence that shook the place they were meeting. In the storm you’ll face this year.
He’s there waiting, looking down the road for the son who left home.
He’s in you, in me…He’s behind us, before us. He is for us!
What does He know? Omniscient
He knows our tomorrow and what it is to wrestles with sorrow
And He knows all of today, yours, mine and the unreached
He knows all about the images we choose to click
And all about the price for the grace He gives to makes us feel sick.
He knows what it is to lose someone to sin and to death,
But He also what it is to see them come home, redeemed.
He knows how it feels to be alone, to be betrayed, to long for a better day to come.
He knows the value in listening and the passion that comes from viewing an injustice.
He knows that secret you’ve been keeping from him, the longings of your heart you’re not yet familiar with. The dream you dare not speak because it’s too risky…yeah, He knows that too.
He knows about all the times you’ll forget him and He knows what it is to love you wholly.
He knows the origin of beauty, of music and art. He knows the small spaces between every note that works to bring tears to your eyes.
He knows every truth we do not yet know. Every, theorem’s proof, every antidote and cure, For the solve Of every algorithm, and new discovery He is already sure.
HE knows why the rain comes and when the rain comes and how much longer for the harvest
Every language on every tongue in every continent fluently, beautifully and intimately
Just as he knows the language of the 18 month old who speaks half human and half heaven.
He knows the uniqueness of every star’s name and when all the billions of them will fall.
Omnipotent: What does he control?
The weight that holds you to your chair,
He takes loving, perfect care of all that we release to him with open hands
The storms that he quiets…. just as surely the storms that toss us till we’re desperate for the fresh breath of life…the Spirit.
The hearts of kings and the power of all men,
The temperature of the sun and the orbit of each planet in each solar system in each universe of every galaxy NASA can find.
The flutter of the hummingbird’s wings and the speed of the Lion
The heat of the lightening and the volume of its thunder
The giving and taking of life in each surgeons hand
He controls himself, choosing to let his wrath be satisfied and to forget your sin
Space, time, weather, seasons, body, salvation, healing, speaking, hearing, truth, marriage,
Whether she’ll say yes or your heart will be broken for his mending
Now for the short lists;
Where He isn’t
HE isn’t in the grave!
What He doesn’t know
He doesn’t know what it’s like not to long for you, every minute, every second of every day since before the foundation of the world
What isn’t under his control?
Right, because he is! YHWH
And He is! Jesus!
He is….the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church.
He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
